Model, Batch or Item: Choosing DPP Granularity
Granularity determines what the identifier refers to and how much product-specific history the passport can hold. Three common levels are product model, production batch and serialized item.
Product model
Use a model identity for information shared across every unit of the same version: technical specifications, standard composition, care, repair guidance and certifications.
Production batch
A batch identity adds lot-specific production dates, facilities, supplier evidence, quality results and targeted recall information.
Serialized item
An item identity follows one physical product and can support warranty, repair, rental, return, resale and end-of-life events.
Make the decision in two steps
First confirm the minimum product-specific requirement. Then decide whether additional detail creates enough operating or circular value to justify the process and data cost.
