Digital Product Passport: A Practical Beginner’s Guide

A Digital Product Passport is a structured digital record connected to a physical product, component or material through a persistent identifier and data carrier. The visible QR code, NFC chip or RFID inlay is an access layer—not the complete passport.

The six layers of a working DPP

  1. Governance: scope, ownership, evidence and access rules.
  2. Identity: model, batch, item and component relationships.
  3. Data: product, material, production, compliance and lifecycle information.
  4. Carrier: QR, Data Matrix, NFC, RAIN RFID or a hybrid.
  5. Integration: connections to ERP, PLM, PIM, MES, WMS and supplier sources.
  6. Operations: availability, updates, exceptions and lifecycle events.

Choose one product family and one measurable workflow. Map the required and useful data, decide who owns it, test the carrier on the real product and connect only the systems needed for the pilot.
